MY RESEARCH INTERESTS

Biocatalytic Synthesis of Industrially Important Molecules

Enzyme-mediated processes are well-recognized for asymmetric transformations, because they can be conducted under mild conditions, and as part of short synthetic routes. The generation of fewer byproducts while avoiding the use of toxic reagents, and the excellent chemo-, region-, and stereo-selectivity exhibited by enzymes can give biocatalytic routes a considerable advantage over traditional abiotic catalysis. The ever-increasing demands of enzyme-mediated synthesis of industrially important compounds are being elegantly met by engineered biocatalysts. The decreasing costs of gene synthesis and increasing availability of the genome sequences have given access to a new pool of enzymes. These novel biocatalysts can provide a massive addition to industrial synthesis of various pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and other important industrial products. This accelerated rate of biocatalyst discovery has permitted scienti?c community to enter a ‘golden age’ of Biocatalysis. One of the major verticals of our research areas is the enzymatic synthesis of industrially important agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals and other platform chemicals.
